Voice 21

We’re a Voice 21 Oracy School!

Voice 21 is the national charity that advocates for and supports schools in delivering a high-quality oracy education. In becoming a Voice 21 Oracy School, we are joining a network of over 1,100 Voice 21 Oracy Schools across the UK that are transforming teaching and learning through talk.

What is oracy?

Oracy is articulating ideas, developing an understanding and engaging with others through speaking, listening and communication.

In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners, we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It is also a route to social mobility, empowering all students, not just some, to find their voice to succeed in school and life.

Our vision for Oracy

At St John’s C of E Middle School Academy, oracy is at the heart of our whole-person education. By teaching pupils how to talk and through talk, we unlock academic potential, nurture character, and ensure that every child knows their voice matters.

Through high-quality talk, rich debate, and dedicated support for speech and language, we foster self-belief, empathy, and articulation to thrive as a responsible citizen in a diverse global world.

At St John’s, we believe that your voice is a gift. Our school vision reminds us that everyone, and every voice, in our community is valued and enabled to flourish as a child of God.

We use our four school values every time we speak and listen to one another:

  • Love: We listen carefully without interrupting. We use our words to lift each other up, encourage our talk partners, and make sure everyone feels safe to share their ideas.
  • Forgiveness: If we disagree or have a misunderstanding, we use calm, honest words to fix it. We listen to other people’s points of view with an open heart.
  • Integrity: We speak the truth with kindness. We use our voices to stand up for what is right, fair, and just, both in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Perseverance: Learning to speak in front of others can be scary! We don't give up. We practise, use our talk prompts, and support each other until everyone feels brave enough to speak out.
